Description

Occupying a privileged space in front of the Church of San Clemente is the Palazzo del Capitanio, so called because it was the seat of one of the two Venetian captains of the city. It stands on the site of the former Reggia dei Carraresi and is divided by an ancient tower, modified between 1427 and 1430, surmounted by an octagonal drum supporting a dome covered with lead sheets. As early as 1426, the building underwent various renovations with the installation of the Clock in 1427, followed by the pictorial decoration and gilding of the dial and finally the Venetian lion, a work by Giorgio da Treviso. Passing the face of the Clock, we enter Corte Capitaniato, one of the courtyards of the Reggia dei Carraresi, commissioned by Umbertino da Carrara; it housed the curia, the chancellery, the lodgings of the guard corps, the stables, the stables, gardens and courtyards for exercises.
