Description
The Church of San Tommaso Becket, or San Tomaso Cantuariense, is a Baroque church on Via San Tomaso in Padua, dedicated to the saintly Archbishop of Canterbury. Alongside its works of art, it keeps a collection of more than a thousand relics.
From the ceiling hang fifteen canvases of the 17th and 18th centuries with the mysteries of the Rosary. Among the furnishings are works by Pietro Liberi, Francesco Maffei and Onofrio Gabrieli, and a Crucifix attributed to Donatello.
In the sacristy, the picture gallery founded in 1966 gathers paintings, goldsmiths' work, textiles and manuscripts, including a 15th-century Madonna Enthroned by Antonio Vivarini.
The church was long entrusted to the Oratorian Fathers, and among the relics is the heart of their founder, Saint Philip Neri. The story goes that in 1632 a portrait of him sweated twenty-seven times.
