- Church of Sant'Andrea
Description
The church, dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle, was built before 1130 and in 1640 was completely rebuilt, changing its layout. From 1875 the single nave was transformed into three naves, separated by Corinthian columns.
It preserves the bas-reliefs of Antonio Bonazza and an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child with Saint Andrew by the Bolognese Giovan Pietro Possenti.
In Via Sant'Andrea we find the famous "Gatta di Sant'Andrea" (Saint Andrew's Cat), which traditionally marks the highest point of the city: a rough stone lion taken as a war trophy from the fortress of Este in 1209 by the inhabitants of the neighborhood. When the lion, at the end of the conflicts, was returned, a copy was made of it.
After being knocked down several times, in recent years it has finally been reassembled by the Paduan sculptor Antonio Pennello.
In 1842, Arrigo Boito was born in the district of Sant'Andrea.
