Description

The Church of Santa Lucia is an 18th-century church on Via Santa Lucia in Padua, first recorded as early as 964: behind its monumental facade lies an elegant interior peopled by twelve stone apostles, and it is the city's church of perpetual Eucharistic adoration.

In the niches of the hall stand the statues of the apostles, by Giovanni and Antonio Bonazza and other sculptors. Above them are the monochromes by Giacomo Ceruti, known as "il Pitocchetto": Evangelists, patron saints of Padua and Doctors of the Church, with a Saint Luke by Giambattista Tiepolo.

Along the nave are a Presentation in the Temple by Domenico Campagnola and Ceruti's altarpiece with the Virgin, Saint Roch and Saint Lucy. On the right-hand altar, a Praying Madonna by Sassoferrato.

On June 3, 2012, a shock from the Emilia earthquake hit the church while some thirty worshippers were inside. The facade was in danger of collapsing: after long works the church reopened in 2017. Lombardo della Seta, Petrarch's friend and disciple, is buried here.
