Description

The Church of San Gaetano, officially dedicated to Saints Simon and Jude, is the church Vincenzo Scamozzi designed on Via Altinate in Padua: outside, a facade as solemn as a triumphal arch; inside, an octagonal hall under a painted sky.

The showstopper is the Paradise frescoed on the vault by Guy Louis Vernansal in 1729: clouds and saints rising toward the Trinity. All around are marbles and stucco, a stone Madonna and Child by Andrea Briosco and an Annunciation by Palma the Younger.

In the Chapel of the Crucifix is a wooden Dead Christ by Bartolomeo Bellano. The facade, with six large Corinthian pilasters, is among Scamozzi's most important works.

The church was built from 1582 for the Theatines, and takes its popular name from one of their founders, Cajetan of Thiene, who had studied at the University of Padua. The former convent has become the Altinate San Gaetano cultural center.
